Rossford Explorer Post 790
Recent Activities
On January 21, 2009 Lifeflight came and taught a helicopter safety and landing zone class. After the class the Explorers got the opportunity to setup the landing zone for a helicopter which was landed by firefighters.
On December 29th, 2008 Post 790 hosted Northville Post 1717 and Highland Post 28 for the 2008 Area Winter Cluster. The event started at the Local Union Hall and Rossford Fire Chaplain Rick Vascik taught an hour and half class on Incident Command and Communications. His class included a 20 minute video from a Houston FD Mayday situation from 2007 in which a Houston Fire Captain became trapped in a high rise office building and was rescued. This video has a good lesson with it in regards to communications - http://www.thebravestonline.com/news.html?view=1&id=1619 . The afternoon was spent at Northwood FD Stat. One going over ropes, knots, and repelling. The instructors for the afternoon were Northwood's Deputy Chief Phil Wojcinski, Northwood Sta. 2 Capt. Marty Koch and Northwood firefighter/engineer Tony Caliguri. The 3 instructors all work at the local Sunoco Refinery. After Chief Wojcinski went through the basic information, the Explorers got the chance to 3 different repelling techniques including repelling with a munter hitch and ascending/repelling with prusik knots.Special thanks to all the intructors, the Toledo Sun Oil Refinery Emergency Response Team and Northwood FD for all their help.

On May 24, the explorers went to Bedford Michigan to participate in the annual "Mock Disaster." During this all day event the explorers run calls of all different natures, car fires, structure fires, ems, and car accidents in which the advisors do not help, all they do is drive. This year we were able to use Rossford Squad 792 as a heavy squad, Northwood 807 as a transport unit, Northwood 806 as an engine, Oregon 24 as an engine and Lifestar Ambulance as a transport unit. Thanks to everyone who let us use their equipment, it was a big help. Please click pictures above to see photos.
On April 23, the explorers participated in a couple of different extracation scenarios. Including victims on the hood of the car, and also a person in the car but also a person who was in the accident trying to get at him, so the explorers had to first deal with him and scene safety then proceed on taking care of the patients.

On March 26, at drill the explorers had a hands on class on ladders, search and ventilation. For ladders they had to get an extension and a roof ladder of the truck. Then set up the extension ladder and climb up to the roof and put the roof ladder up, then climb up that. For search the explorers had to enter a building and proceed to the second story and find the victim using proper search procedures. For ventilation two of our explorers built a roof simulator, so the explorers had to start up the saw and cut the proper hole on the roof. At the end after everyone had gone through every station we had one big incident in which there was a search team, ventilation team, and a rit team to show what they had learned just before. Also thanks to both Northwood and Rossford Fire Departments for their help.

On February 25, five explorers went to Northwood High School to do a demonstration on firefighting and try to recruit people to join post 790. In the demonstration the explorers made and presented a powerpoint presentation about firefighting and the different types of apparatus. Next they set up tables to make a maze and put paper in their masks so they couldn't see. So they went through that doing a proper search and they had to find the victim and bring them out. The last part of the demonstration was that the explorers and a Northwood firefighter took the teenagers through the engine to show them what it carries and also how it is used.
